Back-to-School Bus Safety Tips for Children

Essential back-to-school bus safety tips for children

With the school year starting in Ottawa, it’s vital to remind kids about bus safety. School buses are designed for safety, but children should still follow these key tips:

1. Arrive Early & Stay Back

Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early, and wait 6 feet (three giant steps) from the curb to stay out of harm’s way.

2. Never Walk Behind the Bus

Children should always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them, and never behind it. Walking behind is in the driver’s blind spot.

3. Understand the Lights

Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is about to stop—drivers should slow down, and kids should prepare to board.

Red flashing lights mean the bus has stopped, and drivers must wait for children to get on or off.

4. Boarding & Exiting Safely

Wait for the bus to fully stop and the doors to open before approaching. Hold the handrail when getting on or off the bus. When exiting, check both ways before crossing and walk 10 feet in front of the bus while crossing the street.

5. Sit and Stay Seated

Once on the bus, find a seat quickly, sit facing forward, and remain seated until it’s time to get off.

By following these safety tips, children can help keep themselves and others safe on the way to and from school in Ottawa. At Holmes Safety Training, we’re dedicated to promoting safety in all aspects of life. Sign up for a first aid course to add an extra layer of safety to your child’s day!
