What You Need to Know Before Taking CPR Training

Having CPR-trained employees onsite offers many benefits. It ensures a level of safety should anyone be injured while at the workplace. Employees that have CPR training will also naturally create a safer work environment as they are skilled at identifying risks and fixing them. Moreover, when workers know the safety measures employers have taken, including CPR training, they are more inclined to exercise caution and focus on staying safe.

As an employer, knowing that your employees are safe and there is someone skilled at CPR onsite offers peace of mind. It can also prevent costly lawsuits if someone is injured at your workplace. One thing to consider is whether it is enough to have one or two workers take CPR training or if it's better to offer it to everyone on staff. Consider the risk if your CPR-trained workers are away for a day or two and whether it might be more beneficial to have many workers take CPR training.

Once you've decided to offer CPR training to your workers, you may have some questions. We've gathered some of the most commonly asked questions about first aid training so you and your staff know what you need to know before taking CPR training.

What is first aid?

First aid is initial emergency care given immediately to an injured person. The purpose of first aid is to minimize injury and future disability. In severe cases, first aid may be necessary to keep the casualty alive till the paramedics arrive. First aid skills can be used at work, at home, or anywhere an injury or emergency occurs.

Who needs first aid?

Everybody needs first aid because an emergency can happen at any time. First aid will give you the skills to save a life of a co-worker, friend, or family member. Moreover, you'll gain the confidence to use your first aid skills to help those who need it most. You'll also learn the proper protocol for treating someone injured, no matter where you are. This includes getting consent for the treatment and how to access injuries.

Does your worksite require first aid training?

According to Regulation 1101, all workplaces in Ontario covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) must provide first aid training to their employees. The Regulation also requires employers to have a stocked first aid kit to help treat an injured individual.

How many people should be trained at a worksite?

A first-aider must reach an injured casualty within two minutes. This is the time frame where medical care is most essential to prevent the injury from becoming worse. With that in mind, you'll need to determine how many people should be trained based on your worksite.

Consider the size, layout, and hazards associated with your worksite. Think about how long it would take for your first-aid-trained workers to reach other people on the site. Could they reasonably administer first aid within that vital two minutes? Under WSIB and regulations 1101, staff should be trained in Standard First Aid CPR Level C with AED training for any organization with five or more employees.

What clothing is appropriate?

First-aid training walks learners through a variety of situations. Due to the hands-on practical scenarios that require students to be on the ground and their knees for prolonged periods for first aid demonstration within the training course, casual clothing is recommended.

Advise your workers to wear loose-fitting clothing with paints and flat shoes to their first aid training sessions. Suppose there are any disabilities and mobility issues. In that case, it is best to inform Holmes Medical Training before your course so we can make accommodations for your needs throughout the first aid course.

What does the course involve?

At Holmes Medical Training, we design our courses to be comprehensive to best prepare your employees for scenarios they may see in their day-to-day work. Our courses cover a mixture of both practical and theory in a broad range of topics.

Students will learn how to approach an emergency, give CPR, apply an AED, treat deadly bleeding and trauma, help with medical conditions like asthma, choking, and strokes, and much more. We aim to ensure that those who take our courses are prepared for anything.

Where can you find out more about our course topics?

Holmes Medical Training courses depict real-world examples, which is why our course materials have a sensitive material warning. Sometimes first-aid training scenarios can cause emotional distress in some.

However, our highly trained and skilled instructors know how to offer support and guidance throughout the course to those struggling with the material. Any students that feel uncomfortable with the information in the course can leave at any time and are welcome to reschedule.

Who will be providing the training?

First aid is about people helping people. Our instructors have first aid experience saving lives and performing CPR. We want to give you the skills to make a difference and save a life.

Why it's better not to attend free courses?

There are a lot of companies that say they offer first aid training, but the WSIB does not approve that. Before you book first aid with any company, ensure that they are approved by the WSIB and follow the most current and up-to-date regulations set by the heart and stroke foundation, the ministry of labour skills and development, and regulation 1101. Ensuring first aid training is approved by the WSIB will save you time, money, and disappointment.
