Working at Heights vs. Fall Protection: What’s the Difference?

Working at Heights vs Fall Protection

Are you exploring safety training options but unsure of the differences between Working at Heights and Fall Protection? Let’s break it down.

What is Working at Heights Training?

In Ontario’s construction industry, Working at Heights training is mandatory for anyone using fall protection equipment. This training is regulated by the Ministry under O. Reg. 297/13 and is essential for construction workers. Unfortunately, many still mistakenly refer to this as "Fall Protection" or "Fall Arrest Training," but it’s crucial to know that only Ministry-approved Working at Heights training is valid in Ontario’s construction industry.

What is Fall Protection Training?

Fall Protection training applies to other sectors like mining, healthcare, and industrial facilities that are not covered under the construction regulations. While Ontario and Newfoundland are the only provinces with regulated training for fall protection, it's still valuable across various industries.

It is also important to note that you can take fall protection training without Working at Heights but you can not take Working at Heights without fall protection because it is incorporated into the Working at Heights program.

If you’re unsure if your project falls under construction regulations, it’s important to review how the Ministry defines "construction". Not sure what you need? Contact us at Holmes Safety Training for guidance!
